IPSWICH — The snow is gone, crocuses are here and the docks have just gone back into the water at Town Wharf.
That can only mean one thing: Summer is coming and the boating season is rapidly approaching.
To help keep boaters and their families safe, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is offering the ABS (About Boating Safety) course in Ipswich starting April 22.
“This boating class will give you the knowledge you need to obtain a boat license and/or safety certification in Massachusetts and many other states,” the Coast Guard said in an announcement.
“Subjects addressed within this course range from a basic boating introduction, trailering, safety equipment and typical boat problems through navigation introduction, fishing and applicable boating laws,” it added.
Another benefit is that several boat insurance companies will offer discounts on boating insurance to boaters who successfully complete ABS.
Starting April 22, this $50 course is delivered in four two-hour consecutive Monday evening sessions. Start time is 7 p.m.
It is open to residents of Ipswich, Rowley, Essex and surrounding towns.
